23/11/13 - New Officials Course - Judge Level 1

Dear Parents,

If your swimmer enjoys competing at the open competitions and league galas, we have an opportunity for you to get involved and help our club.

When competing at competitions all swimming clubs are expected to take a set number of judges and time keepers. There are times when the squads are attending different venues on the same weekend, with our current number of officials this is becoming increasingly difficult to provide the help requested, and may have an impact on our entry if we cannot provide the cover requested.

Early in January there is a Judge level 1 course being run for parents, (2 hour). This is the first level in judging and comprises of time keeping and judging turns. Training is done poolside at competitions with a mentor.

Please consider your involvement in this, your participation will not be expected at every gala. There are many benefits to being an official; better knowledge of the sport, receive free programmes, entry and refreshments and often get priority car parking.

We are taking names now, so if you have any questions or would like to attend the course in January please contact Sharon Longhurst at officials@wycombe-swimming.org.uk

Many thanks

Sharon Longhurst
(Officials Secretary)

23/10/13 - Policy Reminder / Update - Leaving, Absence and Illness

There are occasions when members decide they no longer want to swim with WDSC (for example they move away or other interests take precedence).

To avoid confusion the committee would like to clarify to all members the procedure for leaving the club.

Fee Payments
A members fees consists of charges for ASA membership, Club membership and Training Fees. Although we allow monthly payments these fees are charged to your account on different basis. ASA and Club fees are charged on joining and subsequently on a per annum basis in January (ASA) and October (Club). Training Fees for squads are charged on a Quarterly Basis in advance of the training. Leaving The club rules require that you written notice to cancel your membership, please do not rely on a conversation between swimmer and coach. Resignations should be addressed to the membership secretary (membership@wycombe-swimming.org.uk). It is important that members transferring to other clubs inform us of the details so we can process the ASA paperwork correctly. ASA memberships transfer and fees are not required to be paid to the new club until the next year.

To avoid being liable for further training fees charged to your account, members should give notice in one month in advance of the next billing date ie (1st January, 1st April, 1st July and 1st October). Otherwise you will be liable for the full fees for the subsequent quarter.

Policy
The club on Leaving, Absence and Illness will be published on the website shortly for your reference.

23/8/13 - Luke & Liam Selected onto the England Talent Programme!

Wycombe District Swimming Club's leading male swimmers, Luke Thomas(16) and Liam Jones(16) have both been selected for two different ASA England Talent Programmes for this up and coming season.

After Luke Thomas’ sensational nationals performance in 400 IM he has been selected to attend the ASA England Talent Performance Profiling and Development Day in October in Guildford, Surry. From this day he will be tested and guided through specific development opportunities and will then be potentially further selected onto phase 2 of the programme, later in the year. WDSC Head Coach Kevin Brooks, has also been selected to be a coach on this programme; he will join 6 other top coaches from the Region to coach at this camp. Luke Thomas was delighted with his selection “I’m really happy about this; I can’t believe it. I’m looking forward to representing WDSC at the day and learning lots from it!”

Liam Jones has been selected for the England Talent AASE Programme (Advanced Apprentice in Sporting Excellence) based on his excellent 200m backstroke semi final performance at the Nationals. It’s a government-funded initiative that has been designed to help young people aged 16 to 18 combine education and sport. It’s aimed at athletes who have a realistic potential of achieving excellence in their sport – and want to make a career of performing at the highest level, but who also want to continue with their education. This programme is a two year course that will involve education days and training camps abroad. Liam Jones commented on his selection “I’m really happy to have been selected and I’m pleased that I will be able to have additional support with my swimming – I’m looking forward to the camps!”

Kevin Brooks WDSC Head Coach commented “I’m really pleased with these selections as its a great reward for all the hard work and commitment these boys have put into their training over the last year. They deserve it immensely... not many 16 year olds are prepared to commit to 9 swimming sessions totalling about 18 hours of training per week!!

These selections come at an exciting time for Wycombe and should be the start of more good things to come!

22/8/2013 - Impressive Swims at the 2013 National Championships!

Josie Searle bags a Bronze!

The National Championships are one of the pinnacle domestic competition for Age Group and Youth Swimmers in the UK and this year Wycombe sent 9 swimmers up to Sheffield to compete! This was a remarkable increase from previous years – the club hasn’t sent such a high number since 2006. This is only year one of Wycombe District SC benefiting from its new coaching team lead by Olympic coach Kevin Brooks who started at Wycombe after the London 2012 Games.

Of the 9 swimmers completing 6 of those had individual swims with the remaining 3 boys participating in the relay events. For all 9 swimmers it was their first ever taste of National competition and it was certainly a new and enjoyable experience for them!

courtesy of www.dephoto.bizJosie Searle (12) led in the teams resulting performances through earning a BRONZE MEDAL in the final of the Girls 100m Breaststroke – an awesome swim that has now (provisionally) qualified her for the British Championships in April 2014.
Her time of 1:16.87 is a remarkable swim; a swim which puts her on par with several British Female Olympic Breaststrokers when they were Josie’s age.

Commenting on her swim she said “It was a great experience and I really enjoyed it!”.

Luke Thomas (16) made the FINAL of the boys 15/16 years 400 IM swimming a huge PB (by some 6 seconds) and gaining a time of 4:37.59 coming a close 6th. His time also (provisionally) qualifies him for the British Championships.

Liam Jones (16) competed in the 100 and 200 Backstroke in the 15/16 years age group. He pb’d in both events but it was his 200 Backstroke that was the most impressive – his main event – earning himself a place in the Semi Final and achieving a good 2 second PB – 2:10.72. This time is narrowly outside the qualification time for the British Championships but with a good 7 months of training he should be able to make the marker!

Fiona Shaw (18) competed with distinction in the girls 400 Freestyle with a time from the heats of 4:30.37 – just 0.14 of a second outside of her PB.

George Longhurst competed in 3 events and his main event was his individual 200 Fly where he swam a time of 2:20.93 coming 24th in the Boys 14years age group.

George then joined Ethan Carter (14), James Baxter (14) and Jack Cox (14) for the relay events – 4x100 Freestyle and the 4x200 Freestyle. In both events the boys swam huge “overall” PB’s increasing their resulting rankings. In the 4x100 Relay they came 25th, after being seeded 34th and in the 4x200 Relay they came 23rd , after being seeded 38th . Both events had 40 Teams entered – those 40 teams being the fastest 40 Teams in the UK across all 8 Swimming Regions.

Danielle Kidd (12) competed in the 200 Backstroke and tried incredibly hard; as did all of our swimmers! Her resulting time was outside of her PB but this was her first National year, as a 12 year old and this will supply Dani with fantastic experience for when she competes in this up and coming year.

Overall the Club is incredibly proud of our National Swimmers and head Coach Kevin Brooks commented “This year’s Nationals has been fantastic – it’s been great to see the qualifies all experience it for the first time and on the whole, compete with distinction. All the coaching team are so proud of them and we know that this just the beginning for Wycombe. Indeed, this first year at Wycombe (for me) has been great and the club has improved dramatically and with the new pool on its way in the District all swimmers have a lot to look forward too” The new swimming season starts in September and first off is the Final of the Milton Keynes Junior League – Wycombe are currently ranked 2nd in the leader board after two rounds.
21/8/13 - IMPORTANT - NEW SEASON CLUB MEETINGS

On Monday 9th September, there will be a WHOLE CLUB MEETING, with the expectation that every squad and every member will attend. Additionally, we will have a presentation by a Nutritionalist, who will talk about "Food for Swimming".

This is a free event, no ticket required - with the coaches expectation that the entire club will join this meeting to kick off the new season.

05/7/13 - HELP NEEDED - WDSC End of Season Open Meet 13/14 July

Calling all volunteers!

We need volunteers to help at our upcoming Open Meet on the 13th and 14th of July. If you can spare some time, please take a look at the notice board at Wycombe Leisure Centre, and sign up for a session or 2!
We need lots of people to help the meet run smoothly, and we are always looking for new volunteers.

There is no better way to pass the time at a Meet, by helping out.

Don't be shy, if you haven't helped before, most of the roles are easy to do, and easy to learn.

As always, we cannot run our open meets, without the help of parents. Our Open Meets are key fundraising events, helping us keep the training fees as low as possible. Did you know - if we didn't run the Open Meets, every swimmers Annual Bill would go up by about £200. So, its worth doing - but we need help.

In particular, help on Friday night (12th July), from 9pm to set up is critical. with the right number of people it usually only takes an hour - can you spare us some time?

Likewise, please don't rush off at the end of the Gala on Sunday 14th - everything has to be put away! If we have enough people, we can get this done in less than an hour.

Did you know - that sometimes we only get 3 or 4 people helping with set up and clearing up - and then it takes those people a few hours. So, don't forget that we are a members club, run and managed by volunteers - please get stuck in!

We are also looking for budding announcers - it's the easiest job on the rosta - so if you would like to have a go, sign up and we will guide you through the process.

Thank you in advance, for sparing some time to support OUR club.
25/6/13 - Great performance at Milton Keynes Open Meet

The club sent 60 swimmers to the City of Milton Keynes Open meet at the weekend, and the team delivered outstanding results, with a huge number of medals and PBs. In total our swimmers achieved 49 GOLD medals, 41 SILVER medals, 49 BRONZE medals and an incredible 330 Personal Best times!

This meet was an 'unrested' meet, with our swimmers preparing for the target end of season meet at the WDSC meet in July, which makes the performance at CMK Meet even more impressive.

Congratulations to all of the swimmers who took part, we can't wait to see how you perform at our End of Season Meet in July!

12/6/13 - Wycombe goes from Strength to Strength in the pool

Wycombe District Swim Club’s swimmers were out in force over the last two weekends; competing at the Regional Age Group Championships in Crawley, Sussex with the clubs older swimmers competing in Sheffield at their Premier Meet. By the end of the weekend the club based at the 50m pool in High Wycombe has 6 Individual and 2 relay teams qualified for the Nationals this Summer. This is a remarkable turnaround; under their newly appointed Head Coach Kevin Brooks this figures looks set to get higher the following year, based on the number of swimmers that just missed their National Qualification times too.

Kevin Brooks commented “The progress at Wycombe has been incredible. So many swimmers are now stepping up and for some it has now resulted in them achieving National Level status. What’s interesting is that a further 5 swimmers were incredibly close to their qualifying times. Anything from 1/10th of second on 100 and 200m events to being 5 seconds outside of 800m times.

Josie Searle (12) and Danielle Kidd (12) were the youngest Wycombe swimmers to qualify for the Nationals. Josie qualified in the final of the 100m Breaststroke through gaining a Silver Medal in the final at the South East Regional Championships. Danni made the final in the 200 back but qualified for the Nationals in the Heat.

George Longhurst (14) made the final, coming third with the Bronze medal in the 200m Butterfly. He swam a time of 2:19.06 which represented an 8 second pb before swimming at the meet. This time was well inside his National qualifying time. George also competed in the 4x100 11-14years Freestyle and the 4x200 11-14 years Freestyle alongside up and coming sprinter Ethan Carter (14) and teammates James Baxter (14) and Jack Cox(14). Both relays have now been confirmed as qualifying for the Nationals as well. This is a great achievement for the swimmers and Wycombe – this being the clubs first relays teams that have gone to the Nationals since before 2002.

Other Wycombe swimmers reaching the finals at the Regional Age Group Championships were: Andrew Au, Cameron Brooker Ethan Carter and Naveesha Karunanayaka; with Andrew Au winning GOLD in the 11 years 100m Breaststroke Final.

Whilst the younger swimmers were excelling at Crawley Liam Jones (16) competed with distinction in the 200 backstroke in Sheffield, knocking a further 2 seconds off the pb he set in April. In a time of 2:12.2 he is now well inside his National Qualifying time (and ranked within the top 16 of his age group in UK) and is sure to make good inroads at the Championships in Sheffield. Luke Thomas made considerable gains in the 200m Breaststroke smashing his pb by some 4 seconds to reach 2:36. Connor Lewis(16) narrowly missed his 200 Fly National Time by just 1/10th of a second. Very frustrating for a lad thats already knocked some 7 seconds of his 200 fly pb so far this season.

Josie, Danni, George, the relay boys and Liam now join youth swimmers Fiona Shaw (18) and Luke Thomas (16) who qualified for the Nationals earlier in the year. Luke in 400 Individual Medley and Fiona in the 400 Freestyle and 3K Open Water events.

Kevin Brooks, the Wycombe Head Coach, further commented “the summer is going to be a great one for the club; if anything this year has been about the club finding a new wind, a new self belief and new passion for training and competing. So much has been learnt by the kids but they have a long way to go. The next 3 years are going to be an interesting time for us here at Wycombe!”

26/5/13 - Message for those attending MKJL on 1st June

Important information - the venue for the first round of MKJL has changed - it is Hanworth Air Park Leisure Centre, Feltham TW13 5EG.

Due to the close driving distance of this pool, we are no longer going to provide a coach for the team so parents will need to take swimmers to the pool. Swimmers need to be poolside for 6pm for a 6:15 Warm-Up.

If you have not yet confirmed your swimmer can attend then please do so as soon as possible by emailing Craig at assistantcoach@wycombe-swimming.org.uk

19/5/13 - Lost Property

Have you lost something? Following a tidy up last weekend we have a collection of lost property which has been left in the club store or handed in to the coaches office. There are also some items left behind after the Gala last Saturday. The items are mostly unnamed and range from club kit to towels. If you have lost some kit please contact us on ; enquiries@wycombe-swimming.org.uk or see us at the club desk on a Tuesday. Please tell us what it is (size, colour, style) and we will try and reunite you with it.

Parkwood also store lost property, you can contact reception to see if they have your equipment. Equipment left behind after training is collected by the lifeguards.

Remember
Please label all clothes and equipment it makes it much easier for us to return equipment to you when you leave it behind.
Please ensure if you store equipment in the wet store it is all indentified and stored in a string bag and stored on a shelf or hook. Bags left on the floor stay damp and can go mouldy.
Never borrow equipment from other peoples bags.
Always check you have all your kit in your bag before leaving poolside after training.

18/5/13 - WDSC Individual Results from May Sprint Meet 2013

Individual swimmer's results are now available from the Sprint Meet. Individual Times can be downloaded HERE
10/5/13 - Youth Regionals - Team WDSC go from strength to strength

Team WDSC has some great successes at last weekend's Youth Regionals at Crawley and Guilford pools. We are proud to say that, as a result, the club now has 3 swimmers qualified for the National championships;

Wycombe Swimming Club National Qualifiers (so far..)

  • Luke Thomas

    400 IM

  • Liam Jones

    100 & 200 Back

  • Fiona Shaw

    400 Free & Open Water

Fiona was only 0.6 outside of another qualification time in 100 Free and 0.2 in the 50 Free and Connor Lewis narrowly missed his 100 and 200 Fly National Times.

This is a remarkable step up from previous years where the club had no one qualify and with some meets still to come and the Age Group Regionals almost upon us we are hopeful of some more swimmers stepping up and achieving this success.

It was great to see so many more Wycombe finalists at Regionals along with the first youth regional relay teams being entered in 7 years. With the girls 4x200 Free team missing out on National Qualification by 4 places, nationally. Additionally, the swimmers achieved some 65 Personal Best times over the weekend.

We had a number of finalists this year :

Fiona Shaw: 50, 100, 200 & 400 Free
Luke Thomas: 200 Fly, 200 IM & 400 IM
Connor Lewis: 50, 100 & 200 Fly
Liam Jones 100 & 200 Back
And following this the most medalists we have seen for some years:

Luke Thomas: 3 Bronze – 200 Fly, 200 IM & 400 IM
Fiona Shaw: 1 Bronze – 400 Free
Dan Manners: 1 Bronze – 1500 Free

We are proud to see the significant progression of the Wycombe Swimmers, over the last few months and their performance at the Youth Regionals is a great testament to our current program and the new momentum in our coaching team.
Stay tuned for more information following the age-group Regionals in the coming weeks!

05/5/13 - Accepted Entries - WDSC Sprint Meet 11th May 2013

A Message from the Wycombe District Swimming Club Open Meet Coordinator

To all Swimmers and Parents,

We appreciate that there has been a large number of queries concerning the published entries for our 11th May Sprint Meet and to try and assist you manage queries and better inform you here is an overview of the acceptance criteria used.

The May Meet was oversubscribed by 4 swimming hours so unfortunately the impact of reducing the number of entries was more significant and noticeable than previous Meets. To be as equitable as possible swimmers have been scratched from all clubs, including WDSC, because we want WDSC Meets to be representative of all clubs who entered.

We used what we believed to be an equitable acceptance criteria which is outlined below:

1. No ASA registration on the Hy-Tek entry file then the entry was scratched.
2. Limited to two events per session per swimmer
3. Limited to one 50m event and one 100m event per session
4. Number of heats in each event was taken into account when deciding which events swimmers were scratched from
5. Number of entries per swimmer was taken into account

As this is a Level 3 meet I did not feel it appropriate to have a qualification time and then further qualify swimmers out on slowest times.

The lesson learned is that our Meets are becoming more popular and in future we will simplify the acceptance criteria and do it on a first come first served basis for L3 Meets and fastest entries for our L1 Meet.

We do appreciate all entries to our Meets and hope that your clubs will continue to support them.

Regards

Richard
WDSC Meet Co-Ordinator

8/3/13 - New Coaches Join The Team

We are excited to welcome some new coaching support to the club. Look out for these new faces poolside!

Since starting at WDSC a key priority for Kevin was to increase the size of the Coaching Team so that we have additional support for our swimmers and current coaches across all levels of the club.

We would like to welcome the following new coaches:

Helen Bobbett

Helen has been involved in the club for some time and holds her Level 1 qualification. She is heavily involved in the Army and is very keen on Sports & Fitness. Helen will (initially) be assisting Craig Oliver and Lucy Thurston (Masters Coach) with the Club Squads on Tuesday evening 7:30 to 9pm. She loves what the club squad is all about and very much enjoys coaching this squad of swimmers.

Sam Connolly

Sam currently swims in the WDSC Masters Squad and the BNU (Bucks New Uni) Swim Team. He is a Level 2 Teacher and has a number of years experience at Teaching and support coaching. He used to swim for Aylesbury & District Swim Club as a teenager. Sam will be helping out on Tuesday evenings with various Academy & Potential Squads; before he train’s in the Masters Session.... keep an eye out for him!

Struan McNeil

Struan has recently started coaching at WDSC and has had various roles in swimming over the years. Most recently he was the Head of Age Groups at Maxwell Swim Club, where he coached swimmers to Regional and National Level. Indeed, he (as did Craig Oliver) assisted me in the Coaching of Craig Gibbons to the London 2012 Olympic Games. Before this time he was the Assistant Coach at Bicester Blue Fins SC and was Head Coach at Abingdon Vale SC between 2005 and 2010. During his time at Abingdon he coached a Disability Swimmer to World Class Level and National Medals, along with other swimmers attaining National Level. Struan will take a lead coaching role on Monday mornings with the P2 Squad (enabling Craig Oliver to coach on Thursday morning to support me with the current squads attending). He will also be coaching alongside Craig Oliver on Tuesdays 5:30 to 7:00pm (P1 & P2 Squads) and then with me, 7:00 to 9:00pm with the Performance Squads; along with Sundays 7:00 to 9:00 AM.

Currently we also have several poolside helpers coming from the Senior Club Squad and Performance Squads. These swimmers help out on Tuesday evening and Saturday morning. The most recent addition to this group of young coaches is Katie Bromley; who has just started helping with Bronze, Silver and Platinum Academy on Tuesday evenings.

Even with these fantastic additions to the WDSC Coaching Team we are always looking out for more coaching support; specifically in helping swimmers become coaches. Turning their swimming days into coaching ones!

If any swimmer (or indeed, parent) is interesting in becoming a poolside helper or a potential Teacher or Coach; then please get in touch with Kevin Brooks directly. The only requirements he has are that you are 15+, are prepared to have a CRB check and are whiling to learn, listen and become part of our great team!

22/2/13 - Wycombe Level 1 Meet

Luke achieves his first National Qualifying Time!
Luke Thomas(15) qualified for the National Youth Championships in the 400m IM over the weekend at the Wycombe Level 1 Meet. In a time of 4:47.18; which was a 7 second pb and the swim of the meet; according to Head Coach Kevin Brooks. “Luke has trained consistently well over the last 5 months and this is testament to that; I don’t think I’ve seen a swimmer grinning so much after getting an NQT before! This is the first NQT this season for WDSC and this sets that ball running for the squad - it highlights to his team mates that they too are capable of achieving and succeeding”

Several other swimmers improved on their pb’s and came closer to National Level status, particularly Fiona Shaw in the 100 Free, Liam Jones in the 100 and 200 back, Connor Lewis in the 100 7 200 Fly and Ethan Carter in the 50 and 100 Freestyle.

Several swimmers also increased the number of qualifying times under their belt for the Regional Age and Youth Championships and 10 year old Cameron Brooker set the fastest 200m backstroke time for a 10 year old in the UK; so far in this season.

2/2/13 - Officials Urgently Needed

We need more licenced officials for our Level 1 Meet on February 16th & 17th 2013.

If you are a licenced official and are able to help us for any sessions over the weekend of February 16th and 17th 2013 - we would appreciate it. Without enough officials, we cannot run this Level 1 Meet.

If you are able to help - please contact our officials coordinator Sharon Longhurst at officials@wycombe-swimming.org.uk.

10/1/13 - Club Presentation evening

get Meet Mobile from iTunes, it's a free app The Club Presentation Evening will be held Friday 8th Feb at Adams Park.

For those that have not attended before, this is a great evening to celebrate the achievements of our swimmers at the Club Champs, and generally recognise the participation and performance of our members.

As the club continues to grow, we have hit capacity issues for the first time, this year. The venue capacity is limited for safety reasons and because so many swimmers took part in this year’s club championships we will have to limit the numbers attending the event this year.

Entry to the event will be controlled by Ticket.

Tickets are free but, in the interests of fairness will initially be restricted to 2 for each swimmer that took part in the championships (swimmer plus one family guest).
Please collect your tickets by the 29th Jan from the committee members at the club desk on Tuesdays or Saturdays. Do not take tickets if you are not attending, if you do not want your tickets please let us give them to other club members.
Tickets not collected by the 29th Jan will be made available to swimmers who want to bring other family guests.

The Presentation Evening is always a great event, with awards, followed by a disco and we look forward to seeing you there. We are already planning next years event and intend to move to a larger location, to ensure that the entire club can attend, with all family members. Once again we are sorry that the new restrictions at Adams PArk are limiting this.

If you are unable to collect tickets or have any other questions please contact us on enquires@wycombe-swimming.org.uk

05/12/12 - South East Regionals Update

Liam and Fiona lead Wycombe to some Promising Swims

The weekend saw 18 Wycombe District swimmers compete at the South East Regional Short Course Championships, held at the Aldershot Army Garrison Pool. The team used this meet as preparation for their target meet in two weeks time in Bournemouth. With that in mind; the swimmers were going into this meet un-rested and pretty tired! Being tired didn’t stop the majority of swimmers from having some outstanding swims, resulting in some Personal Best times being smashed.

Liam Jones (15) had a fantastic meet, gaining a PB in every event plus qualifying for his first Senior Regional Final; competing alongside Great Britain Olympian Marco Louchran from Guildford in the 50m Backstroke. His efforts resulted in him wining the Junior Bronze; Liam’s first regional medal. Liam also smashed his 200m Backstroke and Freestyle PBs; both by some 4-5 seconds. Fiona Shaw also made significant improvements; knocking a second off her 50m Free PB; which qualified her for the Senior Regional Final.

Natasha Garry, Christopher Harbour, George Longhurst, Mitch Green and Connor Lewis all made considerable improvements in their 200m events; whilst Imogen Shepard and Izzy Baxter made further improvements in their 800m event. Daniel Manners competed in the distance events producing some good swims; namely a 21 second PB on his 1500 Free!

Ethan Carter also took a full second of his 50m Freestyle; whilst other swimmers were also successful in there events: Well Done to Josh Howard, Sarah Collin, Bethany Hirst’, Lauren Jones, Josh Lewis, Luke Thomas & Francine Kidd.

Congratulations to all who took part!

Kevin Brooks (Head Coach)
02/12/12 - WDSC XMAS LIGHTS EVENING 7th December 2012

You are cordially invited to drinks at the Shepherd Family House (Jancis - WDSC Welfare Office and Tony) to see the Christmas Charity Lights.
Tony has carefully planned this lighting extravaganza over the last few months and the display runs a variety of light shows throughout the evening.

Please feel free to call by their house and drop in for a drink and see the fantastic lights.

A map to their house can be found here HERE.

Jancis and Tony would like to extend this invite to all members of Wycombe District Swimming Club and look forward to seeing you from 7pm on the 7th December 2012.

The best times to see the lights are when they ‘dance’ there are 4 different songs alternating every 15 minutes, 00, 15, 30 and 45 mins past the hour between 17.00-21.00hrs

Jancis and Tony nominate a charity annually to support local causes, this year they have decided to support brainstrust as one of our swimmers parents is currently undergoing treatment for a brain tumour.

See the Braintrust website for more infromation.
Brainstrust is the brain tumour charity that offers a unique support service to people who are coping with a brain tumour.
They provide support and advice from the point of diagnosis. This can be offered because of their experience battling brain cancer, our unique network of advisors, and our supporters in the medical, scientific and nursing community.

They are ‘not just a phoneline’. Instead, they offer a range of personal support services that embrace the ways that brain tumour patients and carers want to communicate, and that are accessible when these people need to use them via 24/7 phone and email support, face to face ‘Meet Ups’, printed information and support tools, as well as an online community and 2 websites that each meet a very specific, predetermined set of needs: www.brainstrust.org.uk and www.braintumourhub.org.uk.

02/12/12 - Revised Fee Structure

Dear Members,

Following the introduction of the new squads for the Club, we have published the revised fees that relate to those squads on the website. These fees will apply from 1st January 2013.

Please visit : http://www.wycombe-swimming.org.uk/club-fees_new.html

We have included an modest inflationary increase for all squads and rounded the quarterly charges to the nearest pound for convenience. The quarterly fees exclude the annual WDSC and ASA (Regional and National) subscriptions and these are also shown on the website.

Obviously our costs are not fixed and the largest elements of expenditure, salaries and pool hire in particular, have increased and are likely to continue to increase.

The vast majority of squads change name, but have the same pool time available; therefore those squads see only an inflationary increase. Swimmers in P2 moving to Senior Performance and Junior Performance will see larger increases in fees due to the increase in available pool time. Those joining Senior Competitive will have lower fee and for those swimmers moving in to Junior Fastrack fees will increase from P1, due to a significant increase in available training hours.

The committee have endeavoured to keep costs low and feel that the increase in fees is justified and reasonable. If the increase in fees does cause anyone any particular concern or they wish to discuss them then please contact either the Secretary, Simon Shaw (secretary@wycombe-swimming.org.uk), or our Treasurer, Lawrence Summers (treasurer@wycombe-swimming.org.uk).

For those that wish to pay by standing order we have identified the consolidated monthly charge that is applicable to each squad and also displayed that on our web-site on the fees page.

Kind Regards

Chris Ross
Chairman

16/11/12 - Timekeeper course for parents and members

Dear Parents / Swimmers,

As you know we rely on volunteers to run our events to support our swimmers and club.

We do need more people to train as timekeepers and are pleased to be able to run a timekeeping course next Tuesday 20th November at the Handy Cross pool.

The course will start at 6.30pm with timekeeping practice poolside at 7pm, (for about 30mins.), there is no cost for volunteers - just your time and enthusiasm to help :)

We ideally need at least 12 parents/club members to train for this, please contact Sharon Longhurst at officials@wycombe-swimming.org.uk to register or if you have any questions

This course is an introduction into the world of the swimming official. It covers the practical aspects of what is required of a timekeeper by means of a short theory session followed by a practical assessment.

To learn more about becoming an official, please follow this link.

04/11/12 - Club Champs - we need your help please!

Dear Parents / Swimmers,

Our Annual Club Champs are now only 2 weeks away!!

Hopefully you have already submitted your entries, now the next important request to you.

As you probably know by now, we rely on volunteers to run our events. Club Champs is unique in that it is just for the benefit of our swimmers - offering opportunities for all age groups and as a licensed meet swimmers can get official times. This does mean that volunteers for all roles, including officials need to come from our club.

Please volunteer! Dont worry if you havent done this before - it is a great opportunity to learn, it is appreciated and of course you still see your swimmer compete.
If you are able to volunteer, please email Angela Currie at Currie474@btinternet.com or sign-up on the duties sheet on the Notice Board at the pool
If you are able to help as an official please email Sharon Longhurst at officials@wycombe-swimming.org.uk

Also - we want to re-introduce the opportunity for parents/businesses to sponsor a race or the programme. Minimum sponsor fee is £20. You can name the race whatever you want (within reason) and have an announcement e.g. birthday greetings etc. Please contact Richard Lundie-Sadd at openmeets@wycombe-swimming.org.uk if you would like to sponsor a race.

Thank you

Looking forward to a great WDSC event!

Kind regards

Heather (on behalf of WDSC Committee)

15/10/12 - Ethan Carter Selected to represent Bucks & South Berks at National County Team Champs!

A big congratulations to Ethan Carter who has been selected to represent our County at the National County Team Champs.

Kicking off the 2012/2013 short course season, the National County Team Champs is an entertaining spectacle of 39 counties battling for territorial pride in this junior one-day event.

Here are some fast facts:
Berkshire & South Bucks will have 24 swimmers representing the County
Last Year our county came 12th in Division One.
Our key border rivals in Division One are Middlesex, Surrey, Hampshire, Hertfordshire, Oxfordshire and North Bucks
Something to look out for: Lucy Campbell was the top GB finisher at last month’s European Open Water Championships, coming home 11th in the 5km.

Tickets to attend the meet at Ponds Forge are all tickets available on the door - click here for more details.
The event will be live-streamed - CLICK HERE for more details.
Ethan will be competing in Event 110 - Boys 12/13 Yrs 100m Freestyle

Good Luck to Ethan - from everyone at the club!
13/10/12 - Volunteer Helpers for B/C Meet - Briefing

There will be a short briefing for Volunteers at the B/C Meet on the 20/21 October - Please join Richard Lundie-Sadd (Meet Coordinator) at 18:30 on the Balcony (Deep End) for a short pre-meet briefing. This will only last 10-15 mins, and all volunteers are asked to attend, if possible.

Thanks to everyone who has volunteered so far. We still URGENTLY NEED more volunteers to help out at the meet. We cannot run the meet without your help, so if you can spare a couple of hours over the weekend, please come along to the meeting and see how you may be able to help at the Open Meet.

Our Open Meet events are a critical fund raising source for OUR CLUB, and the income generated supplements members fees. Without these meets, the cost of swimming at the club would dramatically increase.

If you are not sure what jobs need doing, or what a specific role entails, come along and find out. The more volunteers we can get, the easier the task of running the meet will be. See you on Tuesday!
13/10/12 - Committee Update

24/08/12 - Morgyn Peters selected for Team GB Paralympic Swimming Team

Morgyn will be representing Great Britain in swimming at his first Paralympics this summer. By the time he swims his first event; Morgyn will have just celebrated his 16th birthday (20th August), and just received his GCSE results!

Morgyn trained full time at WDCS until he won a scholarship to Millfield School 4 years ago, but comes back to train with our P2 squad during the school holidays. He will make his international debut at the London 2012 Paralympic Games, having shown rapid improvement in the S9 classification.

He reached a world ranking of 13 in the 2010 season, peaking with a 1:07.50 personal best to win gold for England South at the UK School Games in Sunderland. After racing sparingly in 2011, he returned to the fold in 2012, blitzing his pbs over 100m Freestyle and his favoured 100m Backstroke. He reached the MC 100m Backstroke final at the 2012 British Gas Swimming Championships and while his personal best effort for fifth in the final was 0.21 seconds short of the competitive Paralympic Selection Time, he sufficiently impressed selectors to be given his debut Paralympic nomination.

The events Morgyn will be competing in are the 100m backstroke on Friday 31st August (his best event) and 100m freestyle on Friday 7th September. He may also be taking part in the medley relay but this has yet to be confirmed.

Morgyn is in the S9 category - the S denotes that the event is freestyle, backstroke or fly, and the 9 denotes the level of physical disability.

This is a huge achievement for Morgyn, and he comments that he is very excited as well as very nervous. He is presently training in Manchester with the Paralympic swimming squad, and moves to the Olympic Village later this week to familiarise in the Aquatics Centre before the Games begin on August 29th.

Did you know?
He isn't the first in his family to be involved with disability sport - his grandad played a pivotal role in Disability Golf in Wales.
While he lives in Beaconsfield and trains at Millfield, he was born in Cardiff and became an inaugural member of the Disability Sport Wales Academy in 2006.

We would like to wish Morgyn the very best of luck from all of his friends at Wycombe District Swimming Club!

15/07/12 - New Preliminary 2012-2013 Fixtures

2012/2013 Fixture Update

The Club is busy planning fixtures for the new season, and a number of swimmers have been requesting the updated fixture list.
This has now been posted on the club calendar and is available for download on the club website HERE.

The current list will be updated and amended in August, once our new Head Coach has met with all of the coaching staff in August, but the current list provides an initial framework for the upcoming season. There will be additional Open Meet Fixtures added for the November, December and January months, but many clubs have not yet released the full details of their meets at this time.

Our new coaching team would like to assure Parents and Swimmers that there will be plenty of opportunities to attain times for Counties, Regionals and Nationals. These times will be achieved as a result of the new training program, but in November, December and January. Not September or October when swimmers will have just returned from the summer break and may well be unfit. During these months there will be a complete focus on training for all squads, in order build fitness and performance to achieve good times in the subsequent fixtures, which are being organised by the coaching staff.

Kevin Brooks (our new Head coach) would like to advise parents, that swimmers should not enter open meets that are not supported by the club. He will be introducing his training and competition rationale and philosophy during Squad and Club Meetings that will be scheduled to take place during the summer pool closure period. In these sessions both Kevin and Craig will clearly outline how they see training and competitions working together as part of an overall managed program, to ensure our swimmers achieve their maximum potential.

The current fixture list should be viewed as a draft and subject to change, as further Open Meet details are released and we get into the new swimming season.

Kind regards

WDSC Committee (on behalf of Kevin Brooks)

06/03/12 – WDSC Juniors in action - 2nd Place in the TVJL B Final and Hillingdon Meet Report

52 of WDSC's 8-12 year olds were in action on Saturday March 3rd at Amersham and Hillingdon.

At Amersham in the final round of the Thames Valley Junior League Wycombe Juniors produced some fine swims to take 2nd place in the B Final for 2012.
Relay winners for Wycombe saw the 10yr girls medley team of:
HANNAH KRASNER, HARRIET PUGH, MADDIE CLARK and NAVEESHA KARUNANAYAKA
taking 1st place with Naveesha following it up with an individual win in her 50m Backstroke in 39.95s. There were a number of other individual wins with 1st place going to:
11yr ABBY MATTHEWS in the 50m Breaststroke - 43.42s
OLIVER ROSS in the 50m Butterfly - 36.89s
12 yr KATE LEES 50m Butterfly 34.29s.

On the same evening 22 Wycombe Junior swimmers age 8-12 swam for many of them in their very 1st competition away from their home pool and excelled themselves with 84 Personal Best Times from 89 swims!
GOLD MEDALS went to :
8yr ADAM SEARLE 25 m Backstroke 21.70
8yr TOM SANSOME 25m Butterfly 20.46
9yr CLAUDIA MURA 50 Backstroke 54.18
10yr ANAIS AINSLIE 50 Backstroke 50.53
11yr JADE MACKAY 50 Backstroke 45.65 and 50 Breaststroke 49.89
DANIEL ANSTEY 100 I.M. 1.50.51

SILVER MEDALS went to: 8yr TOM SANSOME 25m Back
HENRY CLARK 25m Free and Breast
9yr HOLlIE RICHARDS 25 Breast
10yr MAIA GEHRMAN 50 Butterfly
11yr DANIEL ANSTEY 50 Breast

9yr TINA MACAULAY 50 Back
10yr NATALIE MACKAY 50 Breast
ANAIS AINSLIE 50 FLY
11yr JADE MACKAY 50 FLY and BREAST

Some of our swimmers went so much faster than their entry time they went into B Grade Times making it much harder to medal against much faster swimmers. It is a hard lesson to learn that a PERSONAL BEST TIME is more important than a medal! Angeiina Ainslie was one of those 10 yr olds who just went into B Grade and missed out on the medals her twin sister picked up! but her time 39.81 for 50m Freestyle is worthy of a mention!

Congratulations to all of our Junior Swimmers on a great performance!

14/2/12 - WDSC Junior Team brave the snow for Round 2 - Thames Valley Junior League

A brave team of 9-12 year olds travelled to Maidenhead for Rd.2 of the Thames Valley Junior League. Even before the snow, we were a very depleted team with only 2 10 yr Girls left - our gallant 9yr olds EMILY GLADDING and ANNIE WEDDELL stepped into the gap and swam all the 10 yr relays as well as their own!

Individual Best Times were recorded by 10 yr FINLAY GREEN 50 Breaststroke, Maddie Clark 50 Butterfly taking 3 seconds off from Rd.1, and Naveesha Karunanyaka & Patrick Kenny 50 Freestyle, 11yr Ayodele Evanson 50 Fly and Jonathan Jelfs 50 Backstroke, 12 yr Emma Brune 50 Back and Rebecca Hill 50 Breaststroke. Several swimmers never made it home that night and had to camp out at freinds or relatives so lets hope all the snow has gone by March 3rd for the Final Round where Wycombe will be swimming at Amersham in the B Final resting our A team Juniors for Counties and the Summer Milton Keynes National Junior League.

09/02/12 - Introducing Meet Mobile for WDSC Galas

get Meet Mobile from iTunes, it's a free app WDSC February Open Meet trials new iPhone and iPad App for live results streaming.

With the explosion of iPhone popularity there has come an avalanche of "apps" to help people do everything they could imagine. Now a free application called Meet Mobile, designed by The Active Network, will influence how fans follow their favourite sport.

WDSC will use the app in conjunction with swimming meets, held at Handy Cross Leisure Centre, including the upcoming Level 1 Open Meet.

The app will display meet results in real time as Meet Manager (software used by those running the meet to keep track of event times) receives data from the electronic timing system in place. The results will then be streamed live as long as an Internet connection is available. The free Meet Mobile app, which can be downloaded for the iPhone, iPad, or iTouch, can display the results of each of the event swimmers.

Please note that we will be using this system for the first time this weekend!

Get your 'Meet Mobile' from the Apple App Store. Meet Mobile is a free app.

27/1/12 - A Night of Awards

Celebration and Recognition at the Annual Presentation Evening.

Wycombe District Swimming Club members gathered at the Vere Suite, Adams Park in Wycombe to celebrate the achievements of our swimmers at the annual Club Presentation evening on the 27th January 2012.

This year the room was packed, with Parents and swimmers looking forward to receiving their awards following the recent club championships in 2011. Club Chairman - Steve Vine - started the proceedings, by welcoming the swimmers and their families to what seems to be the biggest event yet, commenting that it was great to see such great active participation in the club by its members. He then handed over to Pip Collin who MC's the event, as the Club presented over 165 awards to swimmers who took part in Club Champs, followed by the Annual Top Boy and Top Girls awards. After this the proceedings moved onto the Coach's "Progress Awards" for those swimmers who had shown commitment to training and worked hard to progress during the year, there was one award for each squad.

After the awards, Steve said a few words, thanking the Coaches for another great year of swimming success as the club continues to grow and progress, with great achievements during the last year. He also thanked the committee for their hard work keeping the club running; commenting that we currently had a strong group of volunteer parents on the committee at this time. Steve finished by thanking all of the parents who had helped the club in any way during the year, at Open Meets, Galas, and much more. He also urged all of the parents to get involved and help run and shape their club for the future.

The proceedings then moved on to thanking our Assistant Coach - ALEX VINE - as he prepares to leave the club to move on to pastures new. Swimmers from the club spoke of how Alex had inspired them to swim and keep swimming, and made some fun of Alex's motivational techniques; which they clearly all enjoy. Alex was presented with a number of gifts from all of the swimmers in the club, including a Red Letter Day Voucher, a Wii and much more. It was emotional, but a fitting way to thank Alex for his dedication and time at the club - he will be missed.

The evening wrapped up with a disco and the swimmers danced and had fun into the evening.

A team of 17 from Wycombe District Swimming Club travelled to High Wycombe's twin town, Kelkheim in Germany, for the weekend to take part in the 39th Internationales Kelkheimer Weihnachtsschwimen at Hofheim Rhein-Main Therme. Wycombe club swimmers have been going to Kelkheim to compete several years before the towns were were twinned in the 1980's.

This year, the swimmers once again excelled in the cold fast water of the Hofheim pool and came home with 29 individual gold, 25 silver and 13 bronze medals. There were also two golds and silvers plus a bronze in the relays. The team produced 75 personal best times from 100 individual swims.

The star of the show was 16-year-old Dan Manners who brought home a grand total of six golds and one silver medal. His amazing form earned him a county qualifying time in 200m IM, 200 and 400m freestyle and the 200m backstroke.

Other exceptional performances came from Tom Lundie-Sadd, 11, who won the 50m, 100m, 200m and 400m freestyle and did the same in the first three distances for backstroke. Lewis Ball, 13, won the 100m races in all four strokes and the 200m individual medley in a county qualifying time. Jasmine Boffin took gold in the 100m butterfly and silver in 200m and 100m backstroke, the latter in a county time. Charlotte Hole, 14, swiming away from home for the 1st time, won a gold plus two silvers and two bronze. David Howard, 15, took the 400m freestyle, 100m breaststoke & 200m IM.

He then helped out in the relays swimming with Dan Hobart, David Howard & Dan Manners to win the 4x100 Individual Medley. This is a special Christmas relay for the meet and we have never beaten Kelkheim before in this event! Jade Ashton, Kate Bromley, Jasmine Boffin and Alanah Bagwell took silver in their equivalent event. In the 4x50 freestyle relay the boys had to be content with second to Kelkheim.

Individual silvers went to Hattie Manners, Ayodele Evanson, Laura Bromley and Jade Ashton, with Megan Langley completing the medal table with her bronze.

Round 1 Report

A team of 33 excited Junior Wycombe District Swimmers boarded the coach at Handy Cross for Barnet on Saturday, June 4th, where they took part in the first round of the Milton Keynes and District Junior League 2011. This is the first of three rounds with clubs aiming to progress to the area final and ultimately the National Final.

Each of the four age groups produced some star performances for Wycombe, with the nine-year-olds setting the standard with gold for Emily Gladding, Hannah Krasner, Erin Bailey and gala debutant Jennifer Lam in their 4x25 medley relay. Not to be outdone, the boys won both their freestyle & medley relays with great swims from James Lewis, Luke Brune and Thomas Gulian, all swimming for Wycombe for the first time, alongside Tom Ross and Cameron Brooke. They stormed to victory 10 seconds faster than last year's nine-year-old medley team! Individual winners were Emily Gladding in backstroke, and Cameron Brooker in breaststroke.

The 10-year-olds continued the winning form with medley relay wins for both the girls - Maddie Clark, Josie Searle, Millie Sansome and Eleanor Meadows - and boys - Jonathan Jelfs, Cameron Brooker, Joshua Lancaster and Patrick Kenny. Individual first places were claimed by Josie Searle in breaststroke, Millie Sansome in backstroke and freestyle and Jonathan Jelfs in backstroke and freestyle.

The finale to the gala is the exciting "Squadron Relay", involving a boy and girl from each age group. A very close fought battle saw Wycombe just pipped into second place. The final leaderboard had Wycombe at the top with 236 points, followed by Harrow, Maidenhead, Hillingdon B then St Ives. Round two takes place on July 2nd and as yet we do not know the draw but it is likely to be much tougher for Wycombe!
